In 2006, two dozen educators, nonprofit professional, parents and self-advocates came together at the Cincinnati Public Schools Mayerson Academy as part of a committee to explore postsecondary educational opportunities for teenagers and adults with intellectual disabilities.
The committee regularly met and ultimately formed into the Postsecondary Education Collaborative (PoSEC), hosted by the Down Syndrome Association of Greater Cincinnati. Today we have 40 members of the collaborative including parents, colleges, secondary schools and disability organizations.
The Collaborative has promoted postsecondary initiatives for people with intellectual disabilities at local universities and nonprofits through large group discussions, conference presentations, a Media Bridges promotional video and email distribution lists.
The Postsecondary Education Collaborative recognizes that there are still many students, parents, teachers, counselors, university staff, and university faculty who are not aware that college and other forms of postsecondary education is an option that can be explored in the planning from high school to adulthood.
